Members attend CPR/AED training

On Saturday, October 29, ten members of Lebanon First UMC  attended a three hour training on CPR and AED, conducted by representatives of the American Red Cross.

CPR, Cardiopulmonary Resuscitaiton, consists of mouth-to-mouth respiration and chest compression to assist persons who are experienced cardiac distress.  Attendees learned how to perform CPR on adults, children and infants by watching Red Cross videos and practicing the techniques on mannequins. In addition, persons were taught how to help those who are choking, whether conscious or unconscious.

In addition, trainees learned how to use an AED, or Automated External Defibrilator. An AED is a device that automatically analyzes the heart rhythm and, if it detects a problem that may respond to an electrical shock, that permits a shock to be delivered to restore a normal heart rhythm. Thanks to their small size and ease of use, AEDs have been installed in many settings (such as schools and airports) and serve a role in expanding the number of opportunities for life-saving defibrillation. Lebanon First UMC has an AED unit at the bottom of the stairs at the Fellowship Hall entry.

Participants practiced the use of an AED with sample Red Cross units, and then studied the Lebanon First unit to become familiar with its operation.

"I hope we never have to use what we learned today," smiled Rev. Peter Wehrly, pastor of Lebanon First. "But our Trustees felt that it is critical that we have this potentially live saving device and know how to use it, just in case someone is in distress during a worship service or attending an event or meeting at our church.

"We are grateful that so many persons came on a Saturday morning to learn these techniquies."
